Apple has always held pride in the fact that iOS is easy to develop for, and that it isn’t fragmented like Android. Even when it upgraded to Retina displays, it made sure that the number of pixels in the new screens were a whole number multiple of the previous screen resolution. Continue reading

What means Jailbreak?

Jailbreaking is a process that allows your  device : iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad to gain root accesses to your device, taking down Apple’s harsh resections. Jailbreaking generally installs an app called Cydia that acts as a third party installer allowing users to customize their device with apps, tweeks, themes, and things not possible in the Apple App Store.

Apple Patent Looks to Improve Performance of Speakerphones For iPhone And iPad

According to a patent published yesterday by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, Apple is looking to improve the performance of the speakerphones for iOS devices. The patent reveals that Apple may change the position of the speakerphones (which are currently at the bottom, next to the dock connector) to improve its performance, even when the iPhone or iPad is docked. iPhone 4S comes with improved speakerphones, probably to ensure that the experience with Apple’s personal assistant Siri is crystal clear, but as you would expect, Apple looks to further improve performance of the speakerphones for future iPhone and iPad models. PatentlyApple explains: Technically speaking, Apple’s invention relates to a speaker having a frame, a sound radiating surface, and a suspension that couples the sound radiating surface to the frame to allow substantially vertical movement of the sound radiating surface relative to the frame. A horizontal former is coupled to the sound radiating surface. The former extends substantially horizontally outward of a peripheral portion of the sound radiating surface, to a peripheral portion that is separate from the suspension. A coil is coupled to the peripheral portion of the horizontal former. This enables the mounting location of the coil to move further outward, thereby substantially increasing the size or area that is spanned by the coil. As a result, a larger coil and magnet assembly is realized, while maintaining the same piston area of the sound radiating surface. This enables the design of a speaker that has a relatively small piston area, for use in relatively small back volume enclosures, but that may have improved performance.  The patent is filled with technical jargon and doesn’t mention any specific benefits to consumers, but as we mentioned earlier, the new position of the speakerphone could provide superior sound, even when docked. It is important to note that Apple’s patent applications generally reveals a very wide-range of possibilities but might never see the light of day, though its always interesting to get a glimpse of Apple’s recent research effort.   Continue reading

Here’s How Some Popular Apps Will Look Like on iPhone With Taller 4-Inch Display

It is widely speculated that Apple’s next generation iPhone will come with a larger 4-inch screen. However, it is not clear if the 4-inch screen will be bigger in both height and width or it will come with a taller screen, to reduce the effort required by developers to update their apps for the new screen resolution. As we have seen in the mockups, a taller display will allow Apple to add one more row of icons to the iPhone’s home screen from four rows per page to five rows in addition to the row of pinned icons in the dock at the bottom of the screen. Overdrive Design has posted some mockups that show how popular iPhone apps would look like on a taller 4-inch screen. They write on their blog: With the expected launch of the new iPhone just around the corner, the gadget blogs are rife with speculation, discussion and alleged confirmations of a new 4″ screen as its main feature. Some sources are suggesting a new display resolution of 640 x 1152 at an aspect ratio more fitting of HDTV content, while maintaining physical hardware dimensions similar to the iPhone 4/4s. We decided to see how some applications would benefit from the additional real estate.   Click on the image below to see all the mockups: Do you want the next iPhone to come with a taller display? or Would you prefer the sixth generation iPhone to come with a bigger display in both height and width? Google Releases Schemer iPhone App

Google has released an iPhone app for its social activity service Schemer. The service aims to help you discover new things to do, share schemes with friends so that they can join you, and make the most of your day. Google explains how it works: It’s all about the schemes! A scheme is anything you might want to do. Here are a few examples of schemes made by our users: Take a mixology course at Bourbon and Branch speakeasy Relive Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in Chicago Use leftover tortillas to make chilaquiles  Surf the sand dunes at White Sands Whatever schemes strike your fancy, collect them on Schemer and then take them with you using the Schemer mobile app. Now you’ll always have a scheme up your sleeve, whether you’re out and about or staying home. Schemer will even suggest the perfect scheme for the moment, for example watching a movie on a rainy day or brunch for a weekend morning. Here’re some screenshots of the iPhone app: Schemer is integrated with Google+, so you can share your scheme or idea with people in your circle or find out the schemes that they have done. We must admit that this was first time we had heard of the service. Since Google has used separate branding for the service, we’re assuming that Google wants to see if people find the service useful, before integrating it in the Google+ app, as it doesn’t make sense to have a standalone app for this service. Download Schemer iPhone apps using this App Store link and let us know what you think of Google’s Schemer service. Continue reading

Verizon to End Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plans When Customers Move to 4G LTE Smartphones

When Verizon started offering Apple’s iPhone on its network in early 2011, it offered customers unlimited data plans. But in less than 6 months, it followed AT&T’s footsteps to kill the unlimited data plans and moved to tiered data plans. It however allowed customers to grandfather their unlimited data plans when they wanted to upgrade to the new iPhone on a fresh two-year contract. Continue reading

Apple Responds to Lawsuits Over Siri

A couple of months ago, Apple was hit with a number of class action lawsuits which claimed that Siri’s performance didn’t quite match up to what was advertised, accusing the company of false advertising. Apple has now responded to these lawsuits in a legal filing, defending Siri’s performance and calling out the plaintiffs for not being specific enough: They [the plaintiffs] offer only general descriptions of Apple’s advertisements, incomplete summaries of Apple’s website materials, and vague descriptions of their alleged—and highly individualized—disappointment with Siri. Tellingly, although Plaintiffs claim they became dissatisfied with Siri’s performance “soon after” purchasing their iPhones, they made no attempt to avail themselves of Apple’s 30-day return policy or one-year warranty—which remains in effect. Instead, they seek to take an alleged personal grievance about the purported performance of a popular product and turn it into a nationwide class action under California’s consumer protection statutes. The Complaint does not come close to meeting the heavy burden necessary to sustain such claims. The response goes onto note that the plaintiffs’ claims are “lack standing” (fit to be dismissed) since they are not residents of California, where the lawsuit was filed. Apple also brings in Siri’s beta status as an added layer of defense: As a cutting-edge technology still under development, Siri was released (and remains) in “beta.”   [...] Although Plaintiffs acknowledge that the Siri “FAQ” page and a footnote on the “iPhone Features” section of Apple’s website disclose Siri’s beta status, they neglect to mention that, both the Siri section on the “iPhone 4S Features” page and the “Siri Features” page to which it links also prominently disclose Siri’s beta status. While Siri’s beta tag might be a genuine enough reason for its far-from-perfect performance, it will be interesting to see if Apple will be able to get away by saying that Siri is a beta feature, especially when the beta tag hasn’t stopped Apple from promoting Siri in the iPhone 4S ads (without the “beta” disclaimer). For Apple’s entire response to the lawsuit, head over to this link. [via WSJ] Continue reading
